The House on the Rock - Part 3
Matthew 7 (KJ2000)
24 Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Hearing is Still Important
Perhaps it is necessary at this stage to point out that while our focus and emphasis in this series is on doing the Word, hearing the Word is also important, and naturally precedes doing the Word.
Luke 11 (KJ2000)
27 And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the crowd lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which you have nursed.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
Some know what the Word of God says and just don’t bother to do it. But others don’t do what the Word of God says because they don’t know what it says. No wonder, again and again, Paul declares war on ignorance!
Romans 11 (KJ2000)
25 For I would not, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery…
1 Corinthians 10 (KJ2000)
1 Moreover, brethren, I want not that you should be ignorant…
1 Corinthians 12 (KJ2000)
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
1 Thessalonians 4 (KJ2000)
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren…
Where ignorance of God’s Word exists, the devil takes advantage of it.
2 Corinthians 2 (KJ2000)
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
We should have a lifelong desire to hear the Word of God – with a bias to do it. Personally, I have found it helpful to run everything I hear through a filter of 3 questions:
What am I doing now, that I need to stop doing because of what I have now heard?
What am I doing now, that I need to do differently because of what I have now heard?
What am I not doing at all, that I need to start doing because of what I have now heard?
Continue in grace!
